John Mackintosh, a self-taught artist originally from Ontario, has been frequently visiting Vancouver Island since childhood. He was deeply moved by the beauty of what Victoria had to offer his art, with its picturesque scenery and rich vast natural surroundings. He moved to Victoria permanently 13 years ago. He primarily paints with oil, usually on board, but he has worked with many different styles and mediums. His artwork comprises primarily of birds and landscapes. He shares his interpretation of nature's design working to incorporate and accent the sacred geometry we all find ourselves a part of. Through a mixture of realism and subtle abstract-impressionism. He has presented his work at a variety of different venues in Victoria, Toronto and New York.

"Most of my work is done in oil on board and some have been started in acrylic and finished in oil. The majority of my work has originated from my photography. My choice of subject matter has been a constant since the time I picked up a pencil or crayon. Birds and their environment have resonated deeply from a place within. A Robert Bateman book that I regularly perused early in my youth, laid the foundation for my desire to recreate nature through my art. Currently I gravitate towards paintings between the 1600's to 1900's mostly French and Italian schools. Furthering my ability offers endless reward in my experience, as it is always changing and bringing me closer to my core vision of creating."

About Sherry

I have been painting with different mediums for many years and now most of my work is on canvas using acrylic paint.   I am so fortunate to live on the west coast, with such wonderful beaches and forests to find inspiration. 

Portraits of children or aging folks especially are intriguing to me. Also, old cars, barns, etc.   I try to be diversified to keep interest and creativity flowing. 

I love to get lost in my painting and can paint for hours at a time, it is very meditative and satisfying.  Fortunately, others appreciate my works and give them good homes on completion.

I belong to touch of art (a group of painters getting together every Monday to paint) we are having another art show in May at Tulista Art Center and hope to see you there!

There is an abundance of nature of all types, and I try to depict it all, from mountains and coastlines, to wild animals, to the gardens and flowers that Victoria is famous for. Anything that I find interesting finds it's way into my paintings.  

I studied Art and Art Education at UVic and graduated with a degree in Art Education.

I was a junior member of the Canadian Team at the Culinary Olympics in Frankfurt, Germany, 1976. It certainly was an eye opener but diner food has always been my favourite. We have been serving breakfast, lunch and dinner for the past 30 years at John’s Place Restaurant in Victoria, BC. Canada. We make everything from scratch including our herb bread, corn bread, banana bread, homemade pies, cheesecakes and all our salad dressings. When Food Network Canada was filming in November for our fall shoot we made our Southwestern Meatloaf,  Mile High Apple Pie, Belgian Waffles with our own cream cheese syrup and our best seller, Eggs Benedict with an authentic real butter hollandaise sauce and we had a blast doing it.

We are Stefano & Melissa Mosi, founders of the original La Collina Bakery on Cedar Hill Rd., which was started in 1997.  We grew this business from a small family operation to a large wholesale company of more than 100 employees.  We eventually sold our shares to business partners and moved to Maui, HI in 2007, where we brought the first gelato store to the Island.  Our business grew to include 3 retail stores and won numerous awards.  In May of 2014, we sold our businesses and relocated back home to Victoria.  Our newest venture is an incarnation of all our experiences, it incorporates gelato, bakery, coffee,breakfast & lunch.

Stefano’s family history in baking dates back to the 1920’s in Italy, where his Grandparents on both sides of his family had Pasticceria’s.  His parents met at the family bakery and eventually immigrated to Canada in 1976 when Stefano was 6 years old.  Together, with Stefano’s Aunt and Uncle, they started the Italian Bakery and brought many of the first Bakery products that are now ubiquitous in Victoria like croissants,brioche, and other Italian pastries.  Today the Italian Bakery and Ottavios is owned and operated by Stefano’s cousins.  MOSI Bakery-Café & Gelateria promises to combine the best of Italian food and local produce.

4 hours Private Wing Chun Self-defense Lessons

Wing Chun is the name of a system of martial arts developed in southern China approximately 300 years ago.

Its originator, the Buddhist nun Ng Mui, was a master of Shaolin Kung Fu and used this knowledge to invent a way to take advantage of the weaknesses inherent in the other Shaolin systems.

This new system was well-guarded and passed on to only a few, very dedicated students. Later, the style became known as Wing Chun, after Ng Mui's first student, a woman named Yim Wing Chun.

More recently, beginning in 1970, Bruce Lee, who trained primarily in Wing Chun but also some other arts, incorporated some of its techniques and ideas into his own Jeet Kune Do. His fame led to international interest in Wing Chun.

The Victoria Shamrocks run into their 63rd year with the team’s name inscribed eight times on the national box lacrosse championship trophy. Cleve Dheensaw looks back on the long legacy of a local sports institution.

Shamrocks lacrosse began in 1950, the year after the old Memorial Arena opened, and has operated without interruption since — currently at Bear Mountain Arena in Langford. Even more than the eight Mann Cup Canadian Senior ‘A’ championships the club won in 1955, 1957, 1979, 1983, 1997, 1999, 2003 and 2005, it is the franchise’s longevity that is its most impressive legacy. It would be hard to imagine the local sports scene without the Shamrocks.
